I Have My Own Will, 2024
An interactive audiovisual installation that explores perception, agency, and temporality as a communicative process through a minimalist interaction among the visitor, light, and the projected image.
Synopsis
In a darkened space, visitors interact with a projected field of black and white light using a handheld light source. A camera captures the movement of the light, while the projected visual responds with a slight delay. This temporal offset creates the impression that the projected light possesses its own rhythm and behaviour, resisting complete control by the participant.
The installation transforms a simple gesture into an uncertain dialogue between human intention and machine response, inviting visitors to question where agency begins and ends and how that affects the construction of reality.
Narrative
Inspired by Elizabeth Povinelli’s concept of geontologies, the installation challenges the assumption that humans exercise complete authority over the systems they create. Rather than functioning as a passive interface, the technological system introduces its own temporal logic through the slight delay between action and response.
The participant attempts to control the projected light, yet every movement is answered by an image that belongs to the immediate past. The visitor is never fully present within the projection but continually encounters a trace of their own action. This subtle temporal displacement creates the impression that the image acts independently, as though it possesses a will that cannot be entirely anticipated.
The work does not suggest that the machine is conscious. Instead, it proposes that agency emerges through the interaction of human body, camera, software, projection, and time. The installation invites viewers to reconsider perception as a shared process and communication in which both human and technological actors shape experience and reality.
Technical
The installation consists of a computer running TouchDesigner, a digital camera, a video projector, stereo speakers, and the necessary hardware connecting all components.
