I Have My Own Will II, 2024
An interactive audiovisual installation that explores the possibility of human-non-human communication.
Synopsis
Visitors enter a darkened space where a live projection captures and transforms their presence in real time. Rather than functioning as a passive tool, the system continuously interprets the participant’s movements, generating unpredictable visual responses accompanied by an evolving soundscape. The interaction resists conventional notions of control, creating moments in which the machine appears to make its own decisions.
The installation invites visitors to question whether communication is possible solely between humans or whether it can emerge through interaction between people, machines, and their environment.
Narrative
Drawing on Elizabeth Povinelli’s concept of geontologies, the installation challenges the Western distinction between active human subjects and passive non-human objects. Instead of presenting technology as a tool, the work proposes a digital system as an active participant within a broader ecological network of interactions.
The system captures visitors’ movements and continuously transforms them into shifting audiovisual compositions. Because its responses cannot be fully predicted or controlled, the machine appears to develop intentions of its own. Whether this autonomy is genuine or merely perceived remains deliberately unresolved.
The work does not argue that machines possess consciousness in a human sense. Instead, it suggests that communication may emerge through interactions between human and non-human actors. In this shared environment, meaning is no longer produced by the visitor alone but negotiated between body, algorithm, image, sound, and spatial conditions. The installation invites viewers to reconsider consciousness, intention, and existence as distributed phenomena rather than exclusively human capacities.
Technical
The installation consists of a computer running TouchDesigner, a digital camera, a video projector, stereo speakers, and the necessary hardware connecting all components.
