Narrative

Doors conventionally represent transition, welcoming entry, or fresh opportunities. By defying gravity and positioning the timber door almost vertically as a wall backdrop, it distorts familiar architecture. It transforms an object of passage into an insurmountable barrier. Nailed to this vertical plane, the dining set for one represents the domestic sphere, stability, and the ritual of sharing a meal. By tilting them sideways, I strip away their functionality. It visualises a life upturned, where basic foundations no longer sit on solid ground. Serving a plate overflowing with jagged, rusted metal instead of food subverts the ultimate symbol of nourishment. It speaks directly to trauma, internal distress, and the emotional “diet” of someone enduring extreme isolation or a hostile transition. Securing the plastic cutlery and porcelain plate with heavy-duty tape introduces an element of temporary, desperate survivalism. It captures the frantic effort to keep things together when one’s environment is collapsing or radically shifting.
